San Diego Mesa College’s Financial Literacy Series is back by popular demand to present students with more exciting speaker events for the fall 2018 semester.
Psychology major Emerald Moreno is inspired by a passion for understanding and interpreting others, along with a deep faith that psychology is her calling. She plans to transfer to a university to earn a bachelor’s degree in psychology, minor in Spanish, and continue exploring a future in law.
After a major surgery and months of recovery, Tracey Kushner faced a decision that would reshape her future. In 2024, she returned to San Diego Mesa College determined to finish the degree she had started years earlier.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — San Diego Mesa College proudly celebrated the achievements of the Class of 2026 during its annual Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 29, 2026, honoring 1,958 graduates who earned more than 2,017 academic degrees and 414 certificates. A total of 727 graduates participated in the ceremony, joined by family, friends, faculty, staff, and community supporters.

As a part of the Financial Literacy Series at San Diego Mesa College, Certified Financial Planner Paul S. Lim taught a class to give students tips on how to do their taxes during the Income Taxes Made Simple on March 14.
“There are a lot of professionals and individuals who like to make the tax code more complicated than it has to be, so my goal in this class is to help to give you a framework so you can understand how the law works,” Lim said.
During his class, Lim taught students about what the tax bracket is and how it works, as well as how to fill out the 1040 Individual Income Tax Return form. One of the biggest pieces of advice that he gave was that unless you have kept all possible deductions on file – and those deductions exceed the standard deduction of $6,300 – it is best to claim the $6,300 in lieu of your individual deductions.
The next event in the Financial Literacy Series is Your Credit Score & You in LRC 435 at 11:30 a.m. on April 4, where Chase Peckham will visit Mesa College to discuss credit scores and how they work. Peckham is the Director of Community Outreach for the San Diego Financial Literacy Center, overseeing educational content for the organization.
Lim will return to Mesa College on April 25 to teach the basics to wisely investing money during his Introduction to Investments in LRC 435 at 11:30 a.m. The final event is in the Financial Literacy Series will take place May 9, when Lim, Peckham and Rae Russell will return to answer questions from the audience about finances, moderated by Professor Howard Eskew.

On Thursday, March 1, 2018 the first of the Spring 2018 Financial Literacy Speaker Series events – The Tax Man Cometh – took place from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in LRC 435. Guest speaker, Paul Lim, addressed nearly 50 students, staff and faculty on the basics of income tax, issues to consider, how to calculate deductions, and various strategies the common working person can use to avoid paying too much in taxes each year. Attendees were busy taking notes and filing out the provided tax forms as Lim guided them through the process of filling in the right numbers on these often confusing forms.
On Thursday, Oct 26, San Diego Mesa College held its fourth installment in the Financial Literacy Speaker Series, “Identity Theft”, with Navy veteran and Financial Coach Rae Russell. Russell is a returning speaker from the previous Financial Literacy events and spends her time mentoring families on how to manage their finances.
